Chapter 12 - Billie

It’s game day, and I am excited. More excited than I have been in a while. I think a part of it is a weight of guilt that has been lifted from me. Now that I know Jackson is single, I don’t feel guilty about the flirting we have done, and yes, I can admit that we have been flirting. Just a little. But it has been there. I also won’t have to feel guilty about being his friend going forward. I am still a little annoyed that Liv is clearly trying to prevent a friendship from forming, but that is her problem, not mine.

After running through the plays and reviewing what we know about the St. Louis defense for maybe the hundredth time, we head for the booth and get ready for kickoff. No real surprise. The guys are crushing it, and by the time we get to halftime, the Mariners are up by fourteen points. We make our way down to the locker room to discuss strategies for the second half. As I walk into the locker room, Adam hops over, eyebrows waggling, and asks, “Did you see those extra points? Remind me, what’s my current record?”

“I am not going to inflate your ego any further, Adam," I say as I roll my eyes and then try to discreetly look around the room.

“I am pretty sure that is your actual job description, Billie,” Adam points out playfully. “Who are you looking for, by the way?”

“What? Nothing. I mean, you are at eighty-one points for the season," I say, trying to distract Adam.

Not surprisingly, it works, and Adam heads over to his teammates, crowing, “Did you hear that? Eighty-one points so far, and we’ve still got weeks to go! I smell a new franchise record!”

“Is that your fault?” Coach Gladstone nods toward Adam, who is still prancing around the locker room.

“Unfortunately, yes,” I admit. Coach Gladstone laughs and then calls Nick and Jackson over.

“Alright, boys, if we get to a twenty-eight-point lead, and I am going to bench you both and give our second string a shot on the field. Billie, you have built out a model for that, right?”

“Yep, even with the second string, I think our defense can hold off St. Louis, and we will be able to exit the game by a minimum of a twenty-one-point lead," I respond.

“Any concerns?” Coach asks Jackson and Nick. Both confirm they are aligned with the plan, but Jackson is looking directly at me with a smile on his face, and he adds, “We’ll get you those two touchdowns, Coach.”

“Great. Now get out there and make me proud.”

“Yes, Coach!” and with that, they are headed out of the locker room.

Gladstone and I are headed back to the booth to watch the second half. In quick succession, two more touchdown passes are secured, one by Jackson and another by a tight end named Marcus Brown. By the fourth quarter, we are so far ahead that our first-string players had been pulled, giving our second-string players a chance on the field.
